Columns, drawers, built-ins

Which kind of Sub-Zero freezer do you have?

FreezerWhere it is differentFirst thing we check
Freezer columnA full-height, freezer-only unit beside a refrigerator column. On Designer Column (IC, DEC) units the serial tag is inside the middle drawer, near the drawer guide.Airflow at the kickplate and the door seal along the full height.
Freezer drawersUndercounter drawers that open into the room. Each drawer has its own gasket and slides.Drawer alignment and seal; frost that starts at one corner.
Built-in freezer sectionThe lower or side section of a combination unit. On Classic units it has its own refrigeration system.Whether the fresh-food side is fine — that splits the diagnosis in two.

Frost

Frost and ice build-up: door first, defrost second

Frost forms when warm, moist air gets in or when the defrost system stops clearing the evaporator. The door is the cheaper answer, so start there: a torn, cracked or flattened gasket lets air in along one edge. Sub-Zero recommends that a technician replace door and drawer gaskets, and gaskets are sold only through Sub-Zero's parts distributors. A gasket replacement here typically runs $150–$450.

If the seal is good and frost keeps coming back on the back wall, the defrost heater or defrost thermostat is the usual suspect ($320–$550). For heavy icing, Sub-Zero's Classic (CL) and Designer (DET, DEC) guides say to turn the unit off and melt the ice with a hair dryer on low, kept moving; the PRO Series guide says to use a handheld steamer instead. Never chip at frost with a knife or other sharp tool.

Codes and alarms

EC40, Service and other freezer messages

  • EC40 with Service flashing (600, 648PRO and 700 Series) means excessive freezer compressor run: a door left ajar, or a sealed system, fan or temperature-sensor problem. Sub-Zero's advice: if the freezer is less than 10° above its setting, clean the condenser; if more than 10° above and the door was not left open, schedule service — and do not clear the code while temperatures keep rising.
  • EE on a 600 Series or a Classic (BI) means a faulty thermistor; on the left of the display it is the freezer's.
  • Double dashes (--) on a Classic (BI), 600 or 700 Series display mean the zone was disabled. Press Power to switch the unit off, then hold that zone's Warmer key while pressing Power.
  • Settings. Classic (CL) and Designer (DET, DEC) freezers come preset at 0 °F and adjust from -5 to 5 °F. Allow 24 hours after any change.

Outages and generators

After an outage: what to keep, what to check

Northern Westchester loses power in storms, and a built-in freezer is often the most valuable thing in the kitchen when it does. Keep the doors shut: Sub-Zero says an empty refrigerator typically takes 3 hours to rise above 20 °F in the freezer, and the USDA says a full freezer holds a safe temperature for about 48 hours (24 if half full) with the door closed. Thawed food may be refrozen if it still has ice crystals or is at 40 °F or below.

When power returns — from the grid or a standby generator — give the unit 24 hours to pull back down before judging it. If the freezer is still warm after that, or the compressor runs constantly, call (475) 465-5086.

Answers

Frequently asked questions

Why is there frost in my Sub-Zero freezer?

Warm air getting in (a worn gasket or a door that does not close square) or a defrost system that has stopped working. The door is checked first because it is the cheaper fix: a gasket runs $150–$450, a defrost heater or thermostat $320–$550.

My freezer is warm but the refrigerator is fine. What does that mean?

On Sub-Zero Classic units the refrigerator and freezer have separate refrigeration systems, so one side can fail on its own. It points to the freezer's fan, defrost, sensor or sealed system rather than the whole unit.

Is a sealed-system repair worth it on a Sub-Zero freezer?

Often, yes — Sub-Zero's sealed-system warranty runs five years for parts and labor and twelve years for parts, so check the unit's age first. Out of warranty, sealed-system work typically runs $800–$2,200.

How fast can you come to Bedford Hills or Katonah?

Most calls get a same-day or next-morning window. Call (475) 465-5086 early in the day.

“Frost was building on the back wall of our Sub-Zero freezer column and the drawer front felt cold and damp. He diagnosed a failed defrost termination thermostat, replaced it, and cleared the evaporator by hand before leaving.”
— Hana K.
“The freezer drawer stopped holding temperature over a weekend. The first visit he replaced the evaporator fan, which helped but did not settle it; the actual fault was a shorted defrost heater found on the return trip. Fine since.”
— Alma C., Bronxville, NY · May 2025
“The upper section of our built-in crept up to fifty degrees while the freezer stayed rock solid. Turned out the condenser fan motor had seized and the compartment was heat-soaking. New motor, coils vacuumed out, back to normal by dinner.”
— Dana W., Bedford, NY · June 2026
“Our wine cabinet had been drifting a couple of degrees warmer each week and I only caught it from the display log. The lower thermistor was reading low and the door seal had flattened at one corner. Both replaced, and it has held steady since.”
— Peter F., Katonah, NY · May 2026
